Several people have called me lately and asked if Michael Jackson owns the copyright to The SC State Song, "South Carolina on my Mind." This copyright is owned by Denny Music, Inc. and always has been. The umbrella company was Cedarwood Publishing. The BMI division of Cedarwood was bought by Mel Tillis back in the 80's and he later sold it to Polygram, which Michael Jackson may or may not own now...I'm not sure. What I am sure of is that Denny Music, Inc, the ASCAP affiliation of Cedarwood was retained by John Denny, the son of the founder of Cedarwood, Jim Denny. I spoke to John Denny yesterday and he assured me he still owns the copyright, as he always has. I'm an ASCAP writer. I wrote the song as a project for Denny Music back in the 80's and it later caught the attention of my home state, SC, and it was made the new state song and signed by Gov. Richard Riley in 1984.
